POLAR BEARS : )



INFORMATION:

  1. They are native to the Artic Circle.
  2. They are the world's largest bear.
  3. They are also the largest land carnivore.
  4. Adult females grow to about half the size of males, which can grow up to 1,500 lbs
  5. This animals spends many months out of the year at sea.
  6. These animals are not usually known to fight and often try to escape confrontations.
  7. Mating takes place in April and May.
  8. Cubs are born blind with a layer of down fur and weigh less than 2 lbs.
  9. Cubs oftentimes fall prey to wolves or even starve to death.
  10. These animals are not as affected by disease as some other terrestial animals.

  • Penguins live only in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • The Galapagos Penguin lives near the equator.
  • Since penguins cannot fly, their wings have been adapted to be flippers.
  • They often eat krill, fish, and squid.
  • Penguins range in size from about 40 centimeters to 3 feet, 7 inches tall.
  • There are between 17 and 20 different penguin species.
  • Many of the species breed in large colonies.
  • Penguins have been observed to have no special fear of humans at all!

KILLER WHALES : )

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. They are also called Orcas.
  2. They are the largest species of the dolphin family.
  3. These animals are found in all of the world's oceans, but the largest population is found in the Antartic waters.
  4. They have a diverse diet.
  5. These animals have no predators.
  6. They are social animals and have sophisticated vocal behavior.
  7. These animals are only known to attack when in captivity.
  8. They three types are: resident, transient, and offshore.
  9. Their calves are born with an orangish or yellow tint which soon turns to white.
  10. There have been some cases where scientists have actually discovered white killer whales. However, white killer whales are rare.
  11. If a killer whale is not in captivity it can live up to 20 years longer than those who are captive.
  12. They have the second largest brains of all marine animals.

  • There are seven different species of sea lions.
  • They are often characterized by their long front flippers.

  • Sea lions use their front fins to swim and leave their back fins streched out when moving through the water.
  • When the sea lions are not mating they will come near the shore and even will occasionally rest in rocky places.
  • They are found everywhere. They are found in artic temperatures and even in the tropics.
  • Like manatees and dolphins, sea lions are known for their intelligence.

MANATEES : )

DID YOU KNOW?


  1. Manatees are sometimes known as Sea Cows :)
  2. They are herbivores.
  3. They can weigh up to 1200 lbs & can get up to 9 feet or so in length.
  4. Their upper lip acts similar to an elephant's trunk!
  5. Manatees are actually believed to see in COLOR!
  6. A manatee's teeth are always being replaced throughout its life.
  7. Manatees spend about half of the day sleeping!
  8. Although manatees usually only swim about 5 mph, they can get up to 19 mph, but only in short bursts.
  9. They can learn how to perform a task just like dolphins.
  10. Manatees have gestation periods lasting about 12 months and tend to breed every 2 years.
